gallery 5 - hand painted rogaland rosemaling and slavic decorative plates

Rosemaling (pronounced Rose mah ling) is a Norwegian folk art and the word means rose or flower painting. It represents a characteristic type of Norse folk painting which is essentially ornamental, never naturalistic and its ideas are charged with ancient magic. Using bold flourishes and delicate scrolls in bright colors on a colored or black background folk artists decorated useful household objects such a bowls, platters, scoops and other wooden utensils creating cheerful additions to any room or kitchen. Beds, cupboards, trunks and even walls and ceilings were decorated with fantastical flowers.

The art of rosemaling appeared first in the Scandinavian countries in 1000 A.D. Trunks and boxes came to America with Norwegian immigrants around 1825.

Rogaland Rosemaling is a style that originates from a particular province in Norway. Its main attribute is its symmetry, it strongly resembles a kaleidoscope. This is my personal favorite style to paint. It is tedious and demanding and very disciplined compared to my palette knife paintings which are spontaneous and free. I do them in the winter and donít even notice that it is cold and dark out, which may be how the Norwegians started it.
